Return of 'The Woodworker' Series, 'Cut & Dried' Update, Woodworkers Book Club & More

Return of Hayward, a New Book Club, Pencil Gauge & More

A quick look at all the stuff Lost Art Press published during the last eight days.

Chris is teaching this week (a stick chair class, natch), and I'm frantically working on my project that is "due" next Tuesday, when I have to load it in my car for a drive to Virginia – here's hoping for no weather (or other) calamities! Busy here, as always. But, we still had time to post a thing or two in the last week – have a look.

Bringing 'The Woodworker' Books Back

Last week we approved a new press run of our four-volume set of "The Woodworker: The Charles H. Hayward Years." We ran out of stock last year, and reprinting the books became prohibitively expensive (thanks, inflation!). So we worked with our printer to come out with a new four-volume set at an affordable price.

A Video Tour of the Work at our HQ

Watch a quick video tour of our Anthe building (the warehouse and new editorial offices). There's lots more work ahead this month. Our cabinets should arrive for the storefront (there's no way we could build these in time or for the price we're being charged). And work has already begun on fixing up the old factory bathroom on the second floor.

Check Out The Woodworker's Book Club

Owen Madden, a professional cabinetmaker from upstate New York, started a woodworking book club, and he wants you to join. "At our shop, we have a monthly meetup, and I get to meet some of the most talented woodworkers and artists," Madden says. "Most of the conversations anchor around something learned from a book, at which point I write down that book and add it to the endless queue. I found that the best nuggets of information come from the discussion and innovation around the text. Naturally, I wanted to create a more organized space for these conversations so I could garner as much as possible."

'Cut & Dried' & Assessing Wood Moisture Content

The third edition of "Cut & Dried" should arrive in February. You can sign up to be notified when it arrives here. In this post, author Richard Jones explains his update to Chapter 6

Earlywood: How to Get Mildly Famous in Woodworking

… Then the attendant said: "I know you. You're on Ray Underwood's TV show – 'The Woodsmith's Shop.' I love your work." I thanked him. And for two seconds, I thought he was going to upgrade me to first class for the coming nine-hour flight. But no joy.

The $50 Tattoo

…Everything was going smoothly until I started working on the face frame's top rail. I don't have an easy way to clamp up the face frame when I put it in place on the fireplace. My clamps aren't long enough. I considered a few other options (pinch dogs, stringing clamps together etc. etc. I've read all the damn Tricks of the Trade columns for the last 28 years).

The January Bloodbath

Every January, lots of small businesses close (plus a lot of people file for divorce). This year has been particularly brutal in Covington and Cincinnati for small businesses, and the carnage is getting a lot of press coverage.

The Anarchist's Apprentice Substack

Sticks That Grease the Skids

When my (Chris) kids were little, they came to the workshop a lot to help or just mess around with scraps and glue. When they asked to build something with me (like a birdhouse or a small table), I quickly learned how to make this work with their shorter attention spans.

Snow Day Thoughts

I (Kale) can't stop thinking about my third apprenticeship chair build. My vision for the chair has been evolving (mentally) for weeks now. In case you missed my recent conversation with Chris, I plan to build Chris's "Peasant Chair," the chair design in his latest release, "American Peasant."
