Congratulations! You played the game, found your next home, and now you've closed the deal. As you move into your new place and make it your own, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you make the most of your home. 8 Quick Hacks for New Homeowners - Paint before move-in. You may not have the time/energy/budget to have the entire interior painted before you move in, but if you know you want to paint, pick your favorite or most-used space and paint just that room. You'll feel a sense of accomplishment and completion right away, and can paint the rest as time allows.
- Distribute paper goods. Put a roll + a backup roll of toilet paper in every bathroom, as well as paper towels in the kitchen and any room you may need to tidy up on the fly.
- Stock each occupied bedroom with a flashlight. While your family gets to know the new house, a flashlight for nighttime trips to the bathroom or kitchen will be appreciated by everyone.
- Check the HVAC filter right away. The last thing you want is to be breathing in somebody else's dust. If the filter doesn't look nearly new, pick up a new one, and while you're at it a few more so you can change it regularly for several months, hassle free.
- Clean the windows. Whether you do the job yourself or hire a professional, sparkling clean windows let in more light and look fantastic. Don't wait until they're filmy or spotted a year or two down the road — clean them now so you can enjoy your new view.
- Bring in a new scent. Carpets and walls tend to absorb cooking and other odors, and these odors may not say #home to you. Place a small oven-safe dish in the oven at 300 degrees with a few splashes of vanilla, almond, or both if you feel like it. Set a timer for 20 minutes, then turn off the oven. Your kitchen will smell like fresh baked goods, and it will help to banish any lingering scents.
- Double check on trash day. The last thing you want to do is fill the trash can as you unpack, then miss trash day! Call your provider or ask a neighbor when pickup happens so you don't miss it.
- Start a Home Binder. Right now at the beginning of your relationship with your home you are dealing with lots of paperwork, setting up utilities, learning your home's ins and outs and quirks. It's the perfect time to pick up a 3-hole punch and keep all the technical info about your home in one place.
