2 Scholarship Classes, Bad Axe Panel Saws & a Rocking Stick Chair

A quick look at all the stuff Lost Art Press published during the last seven days.

We are starting off a busy week today. Megan is in Greenville, South Carolina, speaking to the guild there. Kale is helping get our new Brass Bevel Monkeys ready to ship, and I'm prepping lumber for a class next week. Here's what you might have missed last week….

A John Brown Rocking Chair

Do rocking stick chairs exist? Well they are extremely rare, but Welsh chairmaker John Brown made one in 1988 that recently came up for auction. We have the photos and the story behind it.

'To Make Anything'

When we build furniture, we embrace history, reject it or (perhaps) create it. No matter which path you choose, you need to understand the furniture record. This short blog entry explains why.

Help Fund 2 Chairmaker's Toolbox Classes this Fall

Megan and I are each teaching a scholarship class this fall for woodworkers who have historically been excluded from the craft. You can read more about our efforts here. If you would like to donate a few dollars to help pay for materials and food for the classes, you can do that via this link.

Free Video: Arm Candy

If you have ever struggled to accurately join the pieces of an armbow, I have a new free video that shows you the steps I take in the process. It's simple to do with a 6" rule and a finely set block plane.

Never Sponsored Substack

Full Disclosure: 1996-present

We buy all the tools that we use and review for the substack. But where do we get our money? Here's a look at Chris' finances and business relationships since he entered the woodworking world in 1996.

Bad Axe D8 Panel Saws

Finding used panel saws in the wild can be a difficult undertaking – there just weren't a lot of them made. Bad Axe makes panel saws patterned off the Disston D8. They are expensive. Are they worth the money?

On Instagram This Week

Chris and Megan almost get stranded in Tennessee while buying slabs of wood (margaritas save the day). Some pees at our new Brass Bevel Monkey. And some squirrel toys from the toy museum in Nuremberg.
