If you are someone who likes variety, you will love getting to know Southwest Portland. Of the six main areas of the city, none of them offer a broader spectrum of homes and neighborhoods. Southwest Portland has the city's most urban and suburban environments. It also sports one of Portland's most popular neighborhoods to live in and visit.
Julia Monaghan Real Estate is the go-to expert on Portland neighborhoods. If you're ready to buy or sell in the PDX metro area, Julia has you covered. Let's connect today to get started.
Southwest Portland Covers a Lot of Territory
Starting downtown, everything south of Burnside St. and on the west side of the Willamette River is considered SW Portland. Working your way up into the West Hills above the downtown area, you will find some of the city's most exclusive and impressive neighborhoods.
Continuing south from downtown PDX, you'll get to the vibrant Hillsdale and Multnomah Village areas. As you get to the outer edges of SW Portland, you'll find suburban neighborhoods filled with parks, bike trails, and shopping areas. Even in these neighborhoods farther out, it's just a quick trip downtown to enjoy everything the city center offers.
Encompassing at least two dozen distinct neighborhoods, Southwest Portland is sprawling and impressive and has something for everyone.
Downtown
Downtown Portland is the business hub of the city. With tall buildings, busy transit malls, and one of the state's largest universities, the downtown area is full of life and energy.
This section of town has everything from local mom-and-pop shops to large chain stores. You'll find thrift stores, record shops, performing arts centers, and high-end designer clothes. Downtown has a little bit of everything.
Soccer fans flock to Providence Park to watch the Portland's MLS team, the Timbers. Bordering NW Portland, this venue is a fantastic spot to take in a match. Enjoy the many shops and eateries around the park, and be sure to keep an eye out for the faithful fans, the Timbers Army.
Down along the Willamette River is the jewel of the city, Tom McCall Waterfront Park. This beautiful area is a favorite of bicyclists, joggers, and pedestrians. It also houses the popular Salmon Street Springs fountain that draws young and old to cool off when the weather heats up. It's hard to beat Portland's waterfront on a sunny spring day with the cherry blossoms in bloom.
The park also hosts some of Portland's largest celebrations, including the Waterfront Blues Festival and the city's signature event, the 115-year-old Rose Festival. This festival includes parades, bands, a complete carnival, and the arrival of a fleet of Navy ships.
Hillsdale
As you head west, you will find the vibrant and eclectic Hillsdale neighborhood. Home to Ida B.Wells-Barnett High School and plenty of local shops and eateries, Hillsdale is a great introduction to the inner SW Portland vibe. This section of the city has a small-town feel, just minutes from downtown.
The high school also has an incredible outdoor swimming pool that is a huge draw during the summer. It is a great community spot where families can spend hours playing in the sun. Hillsdale also boasts its own library, a great farmers market, delicious food carts, and Oregon's first brewpub, the Hillsdale Brewery and Public House.
Multnomah Village
Continuing west, you will find one of the most treasured places in town, Multnomah Village. This hilly spot has taverns, coffee shops, restaurants, and local stores galore. You can find everything from yarn to pet supplies to toys to fine art.
It's hard to beat the village for food choices. Fat City, Marco's, and Lucky Labrador Public House are all beloved options. With its location in the hills, many of the homes in Multnomah Village also include stunning views, making it one of the most sought-after places to live in Portland.
West Hills
This part of town doesn't have the most creative name. It's literally west of downtown and in the hills! But what it lacks in naming, it more than makes up for in desirability. The West Hills is home to many high-end areas, including the coveted Healy Heights neighborhood.
The views from the West Hills are the best in town, and the homes are expansive and stunning. But this section of the city isn't only about the houses. It also has some of Portland's most fantastic attractions. The Oregon Zoo, the International Rose Test Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, and the world-renowned Japanese Garden all sit within the city's expansive Washington Park.
The West Hills area also includes the impressive Forest Park. This 5200-acre park is the nation's largest within a major city. It's popular with hikers, bikers, and runners who want a quick trip to some natural beauty and a challenging workout.
Council Crest is another popular SW Portland destination. The highest point in the city offers views of five mountains on a clear day. Once home to an amusement park, Council Crest is now an ideal spot to have a picnic, take a stroll, or run your dog. With a two-acre off-leash area, this park is perfect for fur parents and their pups.
Far Southwest Suburbs
Coming down from the hills, SW Portland spreads out into the valley. This is where city living meets suburbia. Far Southwest Portland is full of neighborhoods that cater to the quiet life of tree-lined streets and lush green lawns.
Butting up against smaller towns like Tigard, Lake Oswego, and Beaverton, the edge of SW Portland offers the space and amenities many families seek. Those looking for a slower pace of life while remaining close to downtown PDX are likely to find the perfect home here.
