The view from the 20 foot floor-to-ceiling windows at Mark Rybarczyk and Anabel Pichler's Barnegat Bay beach house makes you feel like you're floating in the water.

When the couple discovered the home in September 2020, they thought the location between the bay and Barnegat National Wildlife Refuge would provide a relaxing break from their Kennett Square, Chester County home.

"You see the blue of the water, but also of the sky, and they reflect each other," said Pichler, vice president of global rewards at Global Foundries, a semiconductor manufacturer based in Saratoga Springs, NY. "We wanted something on the water, but not super touristy or busy. We both work a lot and wanted something calm and rejuvenating. "

The 16-year-old, 3,000-square-foot traditional-style home has water views from four of the home's five bedrooms. The fifth looks out over the game reserve. Her master en-suite bedroom is on the first floor, where she often wakes up to a glorious sunrise through a wall of windows that surrounds sliding glass doors.

Two fireplaces share a stone chimney that extends up from the first floor to the second floor loft, a relaxing space, also with great views of the water. One wall in the otherwise white room is painted a rich, rich green. Pichler describes her design style as soft contemporary with clean lines and uses color to complement her surroundings.

"On different days at different times of the day, the colors of the walls exactly match the color of the water. It's really remarkable, "said Rybarczyk, software developer for Chefcipes, a website that connects chefs with foodies and home cooks.

The loft has a 60 x 47 inch painting that her designer Christina Henck found. "It says 'beach house' without being blunt," said Henck, owner and senior designer at Henck Design in Queen Village. "It's abstract, but has the feeling of waves rolling onto the shore when the tide recedes."

Although the house is mostly white, the variety of shades within the art draws three of the pops of color through the house – the loft walls, dining room ceiling, and interior doors, as well as the kitchen island and range hood.

The large open kitchen has a two-story island that serves as a meeting place for the couple and their daughters Kendall (16), Kira (19) and Alena (21). The marble dining table has a wave pattern that feels like a continuation of the bay in the dining room, Rybarczyk said. He appreciates the high-quality kitchen appliances, especially the Viking stove.

"While Anabel and I are not great cooks, we used some of Chefcipes' techniques and recipes to learn how to make new dishes, and this oven made a huge difference in our results," he said.

The couple enjoys entertaining family and friends, or watching boats go by from the enclosed patio or back deck that runs the length of the house. A walkway extends from the wide deck around both sides of the house and a natural bulkhead with large boulders extends down to the water.

"It feels so alive and alive," said Rybarczyk. "Almost like on the beach without sand."

The family's favorite pastimes include sunrises over the bay and sunsets over the nature reserve. They also enjoy water sports like kayaking, paddle boarding, and windsurfing, although windsurfing is still in the works, Rybarczyk joked.

The couple, who did not know Barnegat until they discovered the house, have come to appreciate the area and their wonderful neighbors. They had planned the house as a summer residence but were pleasantly surprised during the pandemic how much they enjoyed spending the time there in winter.

"Even when it's cold outside, you still have the sun and blue sky that come in and give you a very relaxing feeling," said Pichler. "Sunrises are beautiful and the way the light shines on the bay is breathtaking. You wake up and you are already a happy camper. "
