Dreamy walk-in closets are all the rage these days, but many homes—especially older homes—just aren't designed that way. However, that doesn't mean you can't have that glamorous HGTV-worthy closet you've been craving! In fact, if you've got a spare bedroom or small room that doesn't get a lot of use, you're only a few short steps from the walk-in closet of your dreams.
Turn a Spare Room Into a Dreamy Walk-In Closet
An empty spare bedroom is typically one of two things: an empty room, or a catch-all for disorganized items without a home. Instead of leaving a room to gather dust (or boxes), why not turn it into a practical space that you'll likely put to use every day? Transform that spare bedroom into a walk-in closet! It's actually not as hard as you'd think.
Here's how to turn a spare room into a glamorous walk-in.
Think about which features you want to add
Before you start designing, consider what features will be most important to you in your finished closet. Will you require ample hanging space, or do you prefer lots of shelves for storing shoes and accessories? Would a dressing room-style mirror be of interest? What about seating areas or a vanity?
Before you start placing features, make a list of everything you want to include.
Design around existing features
Next, consider what already exists in the room. If it's a bedroom, it will likely have windows and probably some type of closet. Instead of a costly cover-up or rebuild to remove these features, think about how you can work your designs around them—windows add natural lighting, and a closet can easily become a vanity alcove or desk.
It is costly and time-consuming to change the existing layout of a room, so if you can work with what you've got, your project will likely be a lot easier to complete in the long run!
Consider making it multi-purpose
Next: think about how else you might be able to use the room. There's nothing wrong with a walk-in closet, but a walk-in closet that doubles as a private getaway, a man-cave, or a hobby room is even better! Adding cabinet doors to hanging areas is an easy way to give the space a more closed, finished feel.
Find someone to help you design and build
While it's possible to design and build your own custom walk-in (especially if you're pretty handy or using a pre-designed closet system), if you really want to make sure you're maximizing your space, it's probably better to team up with a professional for a build like this. Organizer systems are awesome for tidying up closets, but when it comes to transforming a whole room, you definitely want to make sure your measurements are right and everything is going to look fantastic!
For a room redesign like this, it's probably best to find a good contractor or carpenter to help you with the designing and building.
Project timing & cost
How long your project takes, and how much it will cost, largely depends on what you're doing and how you're doing it. For a simpler project (think: a self-install of a pre-designed closet organizer), you might be looking at a week or two, depending on how much time you have to invest each day. For a more elaborate or custom build, you might be looking at a few weeks to a month.
In terms of cost, there's quite a range. Closet organizer systems can be purchased anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, and custom builds can run from a few thousand dollars to… well, the sky's the limit!
Your closet redesign is ultimately what you make it—as big or as small, as simple or as extravagant as you want it to be!
