I was really frustrated last night watching the local news, learning about the continual antics of certain Ada County Commissioners, the two individuals who are making decisions based on their politics instead of science. I am referring to their obstruction to nominating an epidemiologist to the Central District Health Board. I want to scream.
Instead, I am going to find a way to get involved and help my community how to discern fact from fiction, science from conspiracy theories. Volunteering comes to mind.
1 Decide what issues are important to You. It's vital that you find satisfaction in your volunteer work. If you don't, you will have a difficult time keeping up with your commitment. Don't cheat yourself out of a great experience.
2 Consider Your skills and interests. What skills can you offer your community besides your time?
3 Research the Committees that would be right for You. Once you decide what committee is the best fit for you, find out the purpose, role and duties you will be asked to serve.
4 Do not over commit. Decide how often you can or want to volunteer. Know that you are offering a service even if you volunteer only once a month.
5 Be open to suggestions. If you can be open to the needs of your community, two wonderful things can happen for you: you will know you are truly giving what is needed, and you may be surprised by how much you like learning a new skill or service.
6 Consider volunteering with others in Your neighborhood. By doing so, you can share important times together and you can teach each other valuable lessons.
7 Be willing to do Your homework. If your volunteer position requests research, know that it is for a positive outcome and for the good of the community.
8 Give it Your all. When you find the right organization to help and the right schedule, go into your new volunteer assignment with an open mind and a willingness to have fun.
It really is this simple. If you already volunteer, I bet you nodded your head in "yes" as you read this. If you are considering this, use the above points to help you in your process. Good luck!
