NBC's "Dateline: Mystery in Effingham County" is an episode exploring a case of lust and greed that rocked the state of Georgia to the core. In the early hours of August 25, 2008, leading real estate developer Philip Heidt and his son Carey Heidt were shot dead in their beds. His wife, Linda Heidt, was also attacked, but she managed to survive her injuries and call 911. Ultimately, however, it turned out that her other son, Philip Craig Heidt, was the attacker. He had intended to set fire to their house too, but fled when he heard the call.
Who is Philip Craig Heidt?
Despite being referred to as the black sheep of the Heidt family who enjoyed a limitless lifestyle, Philip Craig Heidt had reportedly managed to build a stable life for himself while living in a cozy cabin at a hunting club near Oliver. Unlike his father and younger brother, he had not settled down and was an avid hunter instead of working as a realtor and property developer. But things changed in April 2008 when Craig began an affair with the mother of Carey's three children, Robin Heidt. The family soon learned of this connection, which led to domestic disputes.

According to records, Philip confronted his daughter-in-law in August 2008 and was reportedly a little heated when she tried to walk away. Robin later called her lover to tell him what had happened, and all he said was that if his father and brother weren't careful and minding their own business, he would be "old school". Days later, while the couple was in Craig's cabin, they overheard a low-flying helicopter that Carey confirmed to his wife that he should get evidence of the connection. The couple then got into an argument, and he went to spend the night with his parents.
Robin called Craig, of course, to calm himself down shortly afterwards, only to have Philip, Carey and Linda shot the next morning. No evidence, including empty shell casings, was left at the scene, so it took officials a while to establish that the weapon used was a shotgun. By this point, however, Craig had already insisted that one of his shotguns, boots, and gasoline cans was missing, and even denied his affair with Robin, which it confirmed. But detectives found grenades such as those used in the murders in his truck. He was arrested on May 22, 2009.
Where is Philip Craig Heidt now?
During the two-week trial of Philip Craig Heidt, prosecutors argued that he killed his father and brother and shot his mother for wanting Carey's life with Robin. The fact that the men had changed their wills in the days leading up to the crime to cap the couple's funds also played a crucial role. Craig's motivation, in simple terms, was to secure a future with Robin, receive the $ 3.5 million from Carey's life insurance policies, and win back his share of his father's estate.
In the end, even without the murder weapon available as evidence, a jury found Craig guilty of 11 cases related to the matter. A judge sentenced him to two life sentences and an additional 85 years. The charges included the two homicides, burglary, aggravated assault and aggravated assault, attempted arson and three cases of possession of a gun in a crime. As a result, Craig Heidt is now in his 50s in the Georgia State Prison maximum security in Reidsville. He appealed his conviction, but it was upheld in 2013.
