US Congressman Bill Posey and US Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced the Flood Insurance Rate Map Interagency Technology or (FIRM IT) Act, which aims to help coastal communities across Florida and the country under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Congressman Posey first introduced this law in 2017 but teamed up with Senator Rubio at the last Congress to reintroduce it in 2019.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – US Congressman Bill Posey and US Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced the Flood Insurance Rate Map Interagency Technology or (FIRM IT) Act, which aims to help coastal communities across Florida and the country that on accurate mapping of floodplains as part of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Congressman Posey first introduced this law in 2017 but teamed up with Senator Rubio at the last Congress to reintroduce it in 2019.

"We need to get the floodplain mapping right," said Posey, longtime real estate agent and a member of the House Financial Services Committee. "In many cases we haven't updated our floodplain maps for 20 years. This proposal will help us do it cheaper, faster, more accurately and without duplication. "

"Florida businesses and homeowners rely on FEMA to provide accurate information about their flood risk. Therefore, these maps need to be current and correct, "said Rubio, who leads the Senate effort.

"This legislation requires FEMA to coordinate with appropriate federal agencies to ensure coastal communities in Florida and across the country have the highest quality flood maps."

Specifically, this legislation requires that the Department of Defense, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration provide all of their relevant maps to FEMA for flood insurance purposes in order to provide Floridians and others using NFIP with the most accurate data on flood hazard identification.

"Flood hazard identification and flood risk management are important issues for Floridians, and this simple and straightforward piece of legislation will keep Floridians updated with the most up-to-date information by channeling and optimizing existing resources from other agencies that are producing similar maps," said Posey .
